Continuation – Shoddy Utopia Policy (True End)

『That day, the end of the world was announced. Although I couldn’t help but think of it as something that had nothing to do with me, the world very easily fell into chaos.

Up until yesterday, I’d taken my everyday life for granted. Waking up in the morning, fixing my bedhead, and heading to the station at 7:30. My life at school had also been normal in its own way. Without slacking off too much, I studied like I was supposed to, and made sure not to forget my homework. My grades weren’t anything extraordinary, but I still did fairly well. Thinking back on it now, I don’t really understand why I kept doing such single-minded things.

I once wished that these boring days, that were the same days that everyone else had, would just be destroyed. However, after seeing my wish actually come true like this, I began to think that it wasn’t such a good thing after all. For instance, if my wish were to really came true, I’d want to go back to the life I had before. This kind of thing isn’t uncommon. Once you lose something precious, it’s only then that you realize for the first time how precious it was.

As I thought about those things, it would finally be fated day tomorrow. And for some reason, I felt like going to school one last time. So I woke up in the morning as always, fixed my bedhead, and headed to the station at 7:30. The trains weren’t moving anymore, so it was already rather late by the time I reached the school.

At the school, I remembered about him. Although it wasn’t like we were dating or anything of the sort. We were on speaking terms, but because we never had anything in particular to talk about. We always just talked about things like, “I wonder what the weather will be like tomorrow?” Perhaps he would be in the cla.s.sroom again today, as usual, and we’d talk about the weather, as usual. I didn’t think it was possible, but contrary to my expectation, he really was in the cla.s.sroom. Without looking particularly surprised, he turned towards me and said:

“I heard that there’s a place where the trains are still running. Do you want to go together?”

Without saying a word, I nodded my head. I felt that if we got on that train, it could take us far, far away from the end of the world.

And so, we managed to make it onto that train. There was no one inside besides the two of us. Looking outside of the window at the empty line, I spoke.

“I wonder if I’ll be able to live freely starting tomorrow.”

He smiled at me. I’m sure that he knew the destination of this train from the very beginning. I also realized halfway that this was the life-sized defiance that we’d learned from textbooks.

“It’d be nice if the weather is nice tomorrow, as well.”

I said while looking out the window at the blue sky.

The train slowly moved, taking us away from the destruction of the world. Slowly, it fell, to the bottom of the valley. 』

“Isn’t running away from things you don’t want to see, also an option?”

After tossing popcorn in his mouth and washing it down with juice, someone muttered this.

Despair: The Cure for Heroes

『When I opened my eyes, I was in a locked room.

Around me were several people gagged and bound in chains.

For some reason, my memory wasn’t very clear. What…had happened? Just when I started to approach one of the others, I suddenly heard a voice from the speaker.

“…Well now, good morning. Although it’s sudden, you’ll be partic.i.p.ating in a game. The rules are simple. It’s the King Game. However, I’ve decided that you will be the performer. You are to pull out an order from that box there and carry out what is written. But, you will also to put in an order of your own, as well.”

King Game? What was the meaning of this?

“I’ve heard that you’re a person with a strong sense of justice, and a strong sense of responsibility. Honestly speaking, I’m the villain. However, I won’t be so easily caught. Go through with this game and see if you can catch me.”

Come to think it, I did feel like I was a person with a strong sense of justice, and a strong sense of responsibility.

“Alright, let’s get started.”

I switched my mood immediately. I had to play by the rules of this game and catch the villain. My head was full of these thoughts.

I had to make it clear what was right and wrong. Abiding by the rules, I had to destroy the evil, and become the hero.

“Who’s the King~? Fufufu… well, it’s me. Now then, my first request is…… to kill that guy.”

……What? However, my sense of justice was strong, as was my sense of responsibility. In order to catch this villain, I had to follow the rules. The rules were absolute.

“I killed him. Next.”

“Who is the King~? Fufufu… Next is that girl.”

“I killed her. Next.”

In this way, one by one, I murdered the people in the room according to the King’s orders. Until finally, I was the only one left in the room.

“Next. Who is the King~?”

The final request was the one that I had put in. Kill the King. With this, I could finally kill the villain according to the rules! However, the moment I thought this, my consciousness suddenly became clear.

“….. That’s right. From the very beginning, I was the King.”

I, who had a strong sense of justice and responsibility, could not kill the villain if I didn’t have the legitimacy to do so. That was why I made myself partic.i.p.ate in this game. The voice from the speaker had been my own. However, the game couldn’t be stopped anymore. To disobey this order, which I had drawn out myself, would be a violation of the rules……!

And so, he took his own life. 』

Interrupting my work of struggling with meaningless sentences, I quietly sipped my coffee.

“If you just keep drawing something that’s safe and commonplace, that’s no different from a factory production line, is it?”

The coffee gave no reply.

The World’s Lifespan and the Last Day (Elegy End)

One week ago, the end of the world was announced. It was a much too sudden, and cruel announcement.

That day, I had locked myself in my room as usual, and was just leveling up. After stopping at a good place, I took a break to flip through the channels on the TV, and when I did, all of them were broadcasting this news. I honestly thought it was some kind of prank or movie promotion at first, but when the usual newscaster broke down into tears, I thought, “Ahh, so it’s real.”

And then, the following Monday. Everyone in the world was desperately praying. Enthusiastic preachers were gathering followers by shouting, “If you believe, you’ll go to Heaven in the afterlife!”  Everyone’s expressions were earnest, crying, yelling, throwing themselves in as if casting money away in a rat hole. I, who had never believed in any G.o.d, found the sight of this hilarious. If I were to compare to something, it was like a tragic heroine putting on a pretentious performance.

In the middle of the week, the situation changed again. The country’s big shots stripped in front of the reporters, ranting about things that were banned from being broadcast, and because of that, this country began to lose its ability to function. In all kinds of places, theft, violence, and even rape started to happen. Because it was the end, there were people that were running around rampart, revealing their true natures and satisfying their desires.  It was understandable that they were doing this because “it’s the end for us, so this is fitting,” but the point was that they were rioters. Without thinking about how humans are just animals, a scene of agonizing screams spread out.

Even so, I didn’t feel the reality of it at all, and continued to play games at home, all while being exhausted of this painting of “h.e.l.l.”

And then, it was finally the last day. On the evening of the day before the end, I had come close to clearing my game. I continued to kill the characters on the screen, and progressed with the game. I’m finally going to clear it! At that exact moment, the electricity suddenly went out, and the screen blacked out.

For the time-being, I held my breath, and as if I had pressed some kind of b.u.t.ton, I was thrown out into a city with praying, crying, and yelling all around. The sunset that enveloped the city seemed sadder than it usually was. The world that will end tomorrow, no matter what. I started to feel like I was playing the continuation of a game that no longer existed. This kind of ending wasn’t actually so bad.

And then, as if peoples’ prayers had been answered, the world uneventfully greeted the morning.

“Welcome back.”

The salaryman who walked towards the station seemed happy today, as well.

Grey Boy Rock

This world is mad. Everything in this world is one color, monochrome; boring. Every single day, the same scenery moves along at the same exact speed. What is there to a life that rides on these rails?

I was disappointed today, as well. This world has completely changed from how it used to be. The world now has been transformed, little by little, by the big shots in the government, and all forms of discrimination and distinction have been abolished. As a result, in this s.p.a.ce that is thoroughly managed, it’s as if everyone has been born with the same face and the same voice. All for the sake of the absolute value known as “true equality.”

The person beside me says, “This is a given, isn’t it?” And the person next to him says, “This suits us perfectly, doesn’t it?” Even their own values have been h.o.m.ogenized. Without even realized how terrifying that is, they go on with lives that have been laid out for them. But I hated that. I hated it, but&h.e.l.lip;&h.e.l.lip; There was nothing that I could do. All I could do was pray for a life that was different from everyone else.

I was powerless.

And because of that, I was disappointed today, as well.

It seemed that several people with color had violated the law again, and been executed.

However, even in this grey world, there was one thing that stood out. The one that inspected me—her.

We were ones that had been able to make it into companies after working under absolute control. And the ones that served as inspectors for that were staff such as her.

We had never had a conversation. We always kept a distance between us, and she simply checked me in several areas in a unilateral fashion. In the first place, we were all supposed to look the same, as even if we were to speak, she probably wouldn’t be able to distinguish me from the others.

What sparked my interest in her was a very trifling matter. I had felt like she was smiling at me, who went through life the same as usual. Looking back at it now, it might have been a misunderstanding. However, I changed since that moment. I wanted to escape from this standardized world, where everything was unified. I kept praying for that, always&h.e.l.lip;&h.e.l.lip;always.

And, unexpectedly, that wish was granted. That day, I had been on the belt conveyer as usual. However, after she had finished checking me, I was transferred to a different rail than everyone else. She must have heard my wish and granted it for me! Yes! With this, I could say goodbye to this grey world! That was what I believed.

However, when I looked at her face, for some reason, she had a sad expression on her face. What was wrong? Be happy! My wish has been granted!

I looked away from her face, and saw at the end of the rails, an unfamiliar word: “Disposal.”

The view of today was excellent.
